People in the community can buy cheaper products nowadays. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Essay:
It is true the cheaper goods become more popular in contemporary society. While many individuals say that it is a good trend, I would argue that its drawbacks outweigh the advantages.
On the one hand, it is undebatable that the popularity of no-thrills products is a catalyst for several positive development. Firstly, larger proportion of the publics can afford these goods, and consequently the overall living standard is improved significantly. For example, almost families in Vietnam nowadays have TVs, cellphones, cookers or even a car, whereas they were considered as high-end products a decade ago, which only upper middle-class people could possess. Secondly, the attractiveness of low-price product correlates with larger volume, which in its turn can create jobs, support manufacturing industry and ultimately exert an influence on economic growth.
On the other hand, I do believe that there are serious drawbacks which outweigh all above benefits. One primary reason is that the negative impact of cheaper price which is associated with low quality should not be underestimated. Electrical devices imported from China, for instance, which normally can be used for less than one year and easily got breaks will increase rubbish volume and cause significant contaminations after being thrown away. Moreover, these low-end product are often made of cheap materials and old technology in the efforts to keep the price low, which are seriously harmful for the environment. Another reason is that no-thrills products compete aggressively with more expensive but high-quality ones, hence discouraging any researches or attempts to improve quality but only extremely cutbacks. This phenomenon warns an adverse impact on the future of products’ quality.
In conclusion, although certain validity of cheaper goods’ benefits are proven, it seems to me that the disadvantages are overwhelmed because low-end products are seriously harmful, especially to environment and quality standards.
