Several languages are in danger of extinction because they are spoken by very small numbers of people. Some people say that governments should spend public money on saving these languages, while others believe that would be a waste of money.
Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
It is true that some particular tongues are on the verge of extinction as the majority of people do not use them anymore. For this reason, it is argued by many that national investment in conserving them would be wasteful, while others think that it is necessary to spend money on preservation of endangered dialects. In my opinion, I am in favour of the latter idea.
On the one hand, many people believe that less commonly- spoken languages might not worth public money due to the possibility that studying them could be unrealistic and useless in many major aspects of their lives. This is because these dialects might be only spoken on a daily basis in some remoting areas and therefore not beneficial to the local when attending formal education and applying for jobs. For example, a number of minorities such as Cham, Thai and Mong are not able to use their mother tongues but Vietnamese to take university entrance exams or job interviews in the most parts of Viet Nam
On the other hand, I agree that state budget should go to projects which aim to preserve dying languages. The main reason is that cultural identity, history and world view of human being have been deeply soaked into languages sice the beginning of the world. In other words, when a language which is spoken by a minority community goes extinct, the rest of humanity could lose their philosophical and religious beliefs as well as cultural beauty practices including art, music and poetry. At this point, I believe that a certain amount of national investment in reducing linguistic loss can be justified if these priceless values are maintained and transmitted to next generations.
In conclusion, although I can understand why people may think keeping minority languages alive is a wasteful use of money, it seems to me that national funding allocated to conserve dying dialects can be reasonable.Attachments:
