Some argue that people are discouraged from looking for a job due to social welfare, while others believe that social welfare does not affect their motivation for working. This essay believes that although money supported from the government can help people to live without having jobs, it does not cover all of their needs, so it does not discourage them from working.
On the one hand, with social welfare, people may feel that there is no need to apply for a job when they receive financial supports from the state, which allows them to live their lives without worrying about food or accommodation. For a number of people, the main purpose of working is to earn money for lives and their living standard is quite low. As a result, they can live a joyful life just with the money from the government. For instance, The New York Times has recently reported that 70% of blue-collar workers would leave their careers if they received money to afford things they need.
On the other hand, it is argued that the amount of money from social welfare is not enough for people to satisfy all of their needs, so they still need to work. This is because besides basic needs, people may have different ambitions in lives, such as owning several enormous apartments or travelling around the world. In order to make their dreams come true, they will need a great amount of money which social welfare is not able to supply. To illustrate, Vietnamese people are typically offered with 70% of their previous monthly salary when losing their jobs. However, most of them choose to continue working to earn more money.
In conclusion, despite the fact that social welfare can provide people with basic needs, it is not an ideal amount of money for them to live a luxurious life. Therefore, I believe that people would prefer to work rather than be unemployed and receive social welfare.
