Some argue that there is an increase in the gap between different social classes due to technological advancement, while other people think that it would narrow the gap between affluent people and impoverished people. This essay believes that although technology plays an important role in human life, innovative products have separated wealthy individuals from poorer ones.
On the one hand, it is generally believed that the distance of the rich and the poor has been shortened thanks to the development of technology. In fact, compared to the earlier time, more high-tech products are now available at reasonable prices, which allows the low-income people to experience a life as fulfilled as the upper social class does. To illustrate, blue-collar workers nowadays are able to purchase multi-tasking smartphones to entertain and to explore the information on the internet. As a result, their life quality and living standard have improved significantly.
On the other hand, it is argued that technology actually makes the difference between rich and poor people even greater. This is to say that there are a number of high-quality products which most people with low income levels cannot afford. By using those items, the affluent can easily be recognized and be set apart from others. For instance, women with Louis Vuitton handbags will be considered wealthier than those with unbranded bags. Consequently, people tend to purchase commodities of well-known brands to prove their social statuses.
In conclusion, despite the availability of more devices as a result of technology improvement, I believe that the gap between the haves and the have-nots has been widened in the contemporary world because of the exclusive products.
