Some people think that increasing communication usage of computers and
mobile phones by young people has had a negative effect on their reading
and writing skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The development of electronic devices and computers has been helping
people all over the world stay connected with others more easily. However,
while this is reasonable to some certain extent, I believe that the overuse
of these means of communication also has detrimental effects on their
      ability to read and write.
On the one hand, digital communication has been increasingly developed
offering human a lot of benefits. First and foremost, cell phones and
personal computers or laptops facilitate the speed of communication. In
other words, people can text others in lieu of writing letters, which can
help them get into contact with friends or families immediately despite the
long distance. Moreover, due to the popularity of the Internet, people now
can read books or newspapers on daily basis without staying in one place or
buying printed publications. For example, readers can easily get access to
thousands of e-book on Kindle or Amazon, which can provide them with
      convenience and comfort of reading.
On the other hand, such smart devices may also reduce the efficiency in
people’s ability to read and write. The foremost repercussion is the
proclivity to use formal languages through mobiles and computers. Words and
phrases used in most academic papers are generally formal ones while only
informal and spoken expressions are needed in writing instant messages or
through Internet-based devices. Furthermore, automatic proofreading
software for spelling and grammars can possibly lead to people’s over-
reliance on that to correct their mistakes. This can gradually erode
people’s lexical resource and grammatical range and accuracy. Consequently,
the degradation of language skills can be definite.
In conclusion, despite several benefits mobiles and computers can bring
to people, they can also exert adverse impacts on people’s reading and
      writing skills.
