People try new dangerous sports such as sky-diving or rock climbing. Should
such sports be banned?
It is commonly believed that extreme sports should be prohibited due
to grave risks involved. In this essay, I am going to demonstrate that
concerns over dangerous sports are needless and there are some precautions
that can be taken to increase players’ safety.
Advocates of imposing a ban on dangerous sports may argue that the
inherently high-risk nature of these activities may threaten human’s lives.
Athletes are more vulnerable to harsh weather and equipment failure than in
ordinary sports. For example, skydivers who fall freely from great
altitudes seem to be more prone to injuries and fatalities than players in
other sports. However, such thinking is flawed. All the equipment in
extreme sports must be subjected to a rigorous test prior to use.
Furthermore, participants are required to pass a thorough health check-up
to make sure that they are physically conditioned. Therefore, it is
reasonably safe to play these sports.
I am of the opinion that people should have the autonomy to engage in
any sporting activities they want. As personal freedom is championed in
things like alcohol consumption, it could be said that his or her freedom
should be extended to playing sports. Moreover, several viable solutions
can be adopted to increase players’ safety. Sport Associations should
implement an age limit in certain sports to ensure that participants fully
develop physically. In addition, they should be barred from practices and
competitions without protective gear.
In conclusion, the solutions proposed above may obviate the need to ban
dangerous sports such as skydiving or rock climbing.
