It is widely argued that nowadays consumers are bombarded with advertisements which are useless and even detrimental to them, therefore, the governments should ban all forms of advertising. In my opinion, although there exist several drawbacks affecting people, I strongly believed that they are eclipsed by tangible benefits for companies and communities.
On the one hand, advertising may exert some impacts on people’s lives. The exaggeration of a product’s features with eye-catching graphics may sway consumers to impulse purchase. Moreover, the large number of commercials broadcast on media mass may perplex people, which causes them to make less informed decisions. This is fortified by the celebrity endorsements, which has been a rising trend recently. It may greatly influence their fans who tend to imitate their idols. For example, supporters of a prominent singer, who is the representative of OPPO company, have purchased phones promoted in advertisements and then they have to replace their items upon discovering that these phones do not meet their needs.
However, advertising plays an integral role in prospering companies as well as the society. Attracting people’s attention is the only way producers can do to sell their products. If the governments ban commercials totally, the items will be still unknown without any information accessed by consumers through advertisements and there will also be a high chance that they cannot make any profits to operate their firms. This problem can result in the rising rate of unemployment in marketing-related jobs such as marketers or promotional strategies designers. Moreover, it is true that advertisements must always undergo rigorous check prior to publishing to ensure the quality of information given out, therefore, I am of the opinion that prohibition is virtually futile.
In conclusion, despite several demerits advertisements may bring to people, they also have some merits that are irrefutable. They should not be banned for the sake of developing to firms and society.
