Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

It is argued that sufficient punishment is essential to control criminal rate. While some individuals say that long imprisonment is the most effective approach against criminals, I would argue that we have several other better choices to prevent crime.
On the one hand, serving a long prison sentence can act as a deterrent and would be one useful measure due to various reasons. Firstly, a prison term for years is considered as the full weight of the law on wrongdoers at the expense of their improper actions. Thus, many of would-be offenders may change their mind because their freedom will be taken away if they are found guilty by the jury. Secondly, a lengthy prison sentence keeps criminals from posing further threats to society. For example, a murder who committed sensational crimes must be controlled strictly under polices’ supervison to ensure safety of othe citizens.
On the other hand, it seems to me that sufficient education and media control can impose positive impact on offend rate. In term of crime prevention, education for youngster plays a crucial role to pave the way for crime-free adult life. Understanding what is right, what is wrong and how tough on crime their society are will set the right mindset and consequently, they will behave in a socially acceptable way. Besides, crime is currently one of the main subjects of most news programs as sensational stories attract more viewers and readers. This phenomenon, however, may affect negatively on public in a way of unpurposely promoting violence and crime. Therefore, putting a necessary control on media obviously directs a reduction in crime.
In summary, longer prison sentences may be a good way to punish wrongdoers, I do believe that other measures such as educating properly and filtering public information are more effective to slow down criminal trend as well as avoid people turning to offend.
