It is neither possible nor useful for a country to provide university places for a high proportion of young people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
University plays an important role in society and opens a lot of doors for young people, but some people argue that equipping youngsters with tertiary education on a large scale is infeasible as well as inefficient. I completely agree with this view for many reasons.
It is true that offering almost the youth of one country higher education is impossible to realize. Firstly, this policy will face a great obstacle that tuition fees in university are too expensive for some segments in society to afford, especially the poor. In addition, the duration of this education takes numerous years which resists young people to work and settle down soon, then a considerable number of youngsters will not attend graduate school. Secondly, it is difficult for colleges to hold such a great quantity of students because it costs a huge amount of funding. To consider laboratories in some campus as an example, if the number of students increases significantly, a lot of modern scientific and technical equipment have to be installed to meet teaching and learning demands, which are often extremely expensive.
Furthermore, I also agree with the idea that providing tertiary education for a large percentage of young people is not efficient. From a personal perspective, it can be argued that not everyone dreams of taking higher education to obtain academic knowledge or to earn a high salary in the future. There are some individuals think that it is not necessary to continue their education, and they prefer to take part in vocational courses or to get a job straight after school. In this case, offering them opportunities to study in university is fairly useless. On a society level, if there are plentiful university places, it can create an imbalance in workforce, because very few graduated students do blue-collar jobs. Consequently, the lack of labor factories and farms can occur, and employees with high qualifications like doctor or engineer may be made redundant.
In conclusion, I fully support the view that it is impossible and unuseful for a country to provide entry to tertiary education for the majority of youths.
