Some people think that genetically modified (GM) crops are a positive development. Others, however, argue that they are potentially dangerous. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
People have different views about whether transgenic crops brings convinced merits or potential dangers in human life. While advances in GM technology are necessary for agricultural field, I believe that threats from them should not be ignored.
On the one hand, genetic modification in crops has some significant benefits for human beings. Firstly, GM crops are better for the environment because the technology requires less chemicals to thrive, so the impact on the environment is lessened. Secondly, products from GM ingredients can get higher productivity because of increased resistance to disease, better flavor and improved nutritional value. For example, the vitamins which are found in GM soya bean are three times more than a normal one. Finally, GM products have a longer life which helps they can stay fresh during transportation and storage.
On the other hand, food species that have been genetically engineered could be long-term negative effects. To be more detailed, there has very little testing and research done on GM foods and GM industry has not been able to prove that they are safe. Therefore, human health could be affected by eating these foods. In addition, the crops that have been genetically modified have antibiotic properties put into them in order to make them immune to certain diseases. When people eat these foods these properties are left in people’s body and can make many antibiotics less effective. Moreover, GM crops may contaminate nearby plants when the pollen from GM crops are carried to plantation of non-GM produce.
In conclusion, although GM crops have their obvious advantages, they still present some potential dangers. In my opinion, long-term studies should be taken to prevent from unforeseen consequences.
