The government spends about GBP 220 million a year supporting museums and galleries in the UK, and a similar amount subsidizing the visual and performing arts.
This is huge sum to spend on minority interests, and the money would be better spent on more important things. It should be up to people who enjoy cultural attractions to pay for them.
      What are your views?
Spending an enormous budget to support and subsidize the cultural and artistic life in the UK has been a major topic of concern in society. While I accept that this practice is beneficial in a few ways, I believe the money should be well spent on essential sectors.
There are certain benefits of using public fund for the culture and the art. The most obvious benefit is to educate generations about the history of nation. For example, historical collections, paintings, sculptures and exhibits are cultural heritages and legacy from one generation to another. From these, the young may enrich the history of their country that cannot be easily learned in classrooms. In addition, the artistic places attract many foreign tourists which promotes cultural tourism and eventual national income. Besides, visiting to these places helps people not only heighten their sense of beauty but also stimulate their creativity. Therefore, it is necessary for the government to invest money annually on the cultural attractions although there are minority people enjoying them.
However, I am convinced that public money should not be extravagant and allocate different sectors based on the priority of the community such as health care, education and public transportation. If the massive budget uses for only the art, other sectors will deduct and can negatively impact on the living quantity of many citizens. This also can lead to the tax increase as well as the burden on the poor. Due to these drawbacks, the authority should balance the budgets for spending important aspects of the community.
In conclusion, cultural attractions should be supported and subsidized by the government with their interests and value. But overall, the budgets for all society sectors need using in a balanced way.
