Schools are spending more time teaching traditional subjects such as history. Some people think they should rather spend more time in teaching skills that can help students find a job. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
These days, a growing number of people are concerned about how much time should spend on subjects in schools. While some people believe that schools had better focus on skills which are useful for seeking jobs in the future than traditional subjects, I disagree with this view.
To begin with, focusing on teaching skills related to future jobs in the later students’ lives is suitable for universities. It is undeniable that teenagers need to accumulate knowledge, skills and experience to become mature. That is the reason why cirriculums are designed for students to study in balance of subjects in schools for their comprehensive understanding. Therefore, concentrating on teaching skills which are useful for finding jobs cause lack of other basic knowledge but less important such as literature or history which supply knowledge about human and culture to develop critical thinking and solving problems.
In the other hand, students have different talents and passions in every subject, while some teenagers enjoy science but others are fan of history. Teaching certain crucial skills like information technology or mathematics may be unfair for students who are interested in painting or literature. In addition, no one is able to really predict which areas of knowledge and skills will be most useful to society in the future. Whereas, we are living in societies where economy base on knowledge, employers tend to recruit graduates having not only good knowledge and working skills but also soft skills such as communication, critical thinking. Therefore, balance of teaching subjects in schools are necessary for their comprehensive personal developments before having jobs.
In conclusion, it seems to me that teaching skills related to later careers in the schools is unnecessary for teenagers. It is better to teach them as designed curriculums to secure they have enough knowledge and skills for their future.
