Nowadays, full- time university students tend to focus on their studying. Some people think it is essential for university students to be involved in other activities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Today, students in universities have a tendency to put more focus on their studying. Some would argue that it is important for university students to participate in some activities other than academic studying. I strongly agree with this statement as non-academic activities actually improve students’ academic performance and increase their chance of employment in the future.
Students should volunteer for charity campaigns or social services because these activities will help boost their capability to study academic lessons. When people try to push their brains to absorb a large amount of knowledge from books and lecturers in school, they will soon get tired and bored leading to a poor understanding of what they have learned. Hence, doing non-academic activities will allow them to release stress and become more ready to study schools’ lessons. For example, a study by Harvard University in 2010 showed that sophomores that took the 2-month trip to Kenya and taught English to children at the end of the year performed incredibly better than those who did not in the following academic year.
Getting involved in non-academic activities also gives students higher opportunities to seize good jobs in the future. This is because students’ efforts in any charity campaign or service will be recorded after finishing, and these records will likely assure them to secure an occupation after they graduate as most job recruiters are looking for workers that are reliable and credited. For instance, Samsung, the biggest technology company in Korea, announced that they will not likely recruit applicants who have not done any social service in university.
In conclusion, it is indeed essential for university students to stay active in non-academic activities because it enhances their studying and also provides them with good backgrounds for future employment.
