Cambridge 9, test 2:
Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children).
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is argued that unpaid social work should be made as an integral part of high school curriculum. Personally, I completely disagree with this idea.
Most teenagers are already under enough pressure with their study programs, not mention to the added responsibility of working in their free time. Students are expected to do their home work and exam revision on top of attending the lessons every day which accounts for a large amount of their time during the day. Furthermore, high school period is essential for students because they need to study hard in order to overcome the entrance exam of their desirable universities or colleges which determines directly career ladder of students in the future. If they are required to do unpaid work, it seems that they do not have enough time to do everything effectively.
Meanwhile, obliging young people to do unpaid work is likely to have adverse effect on the initial meaning of social activity. In fact, the purpose of this activity is to help the community and make life better. However, forcing students to do voluntary work can lead to resentment amongst them which makes them fulfill their obligations with lower level of enthusiasm. This certainly results in disappointing job performance. For example, if high school students are required to help neighborhood to clean the garden according to a program of a community organization, but these students feel that they are too exhausted due to load of homework. Therefore, they would not finish the obligation effectively, and this, of course, affecting the reputation of social organization.
In conclusion, I do support the idea that teenagers should not be required to take part in unpaid community work as a part of their education program.
