Cambridge 9, test 2:
Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children).
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is argued that high school students are forced to do unpaid-social work as a part of education curriculum. Personally, I completely disagree with this idea.
Most teenagers are already under enough pressure with their study programs, not mention to the added responsibility of working in their free time. Firstly, students are expected to do their home work and exam revision on top of attending the lessons every day and this accounts for large amount of their time during the day. Furthermore, high school period is essential for students because they need to choose their future jobs and then having a suitable studying strategy. If they are required to do unpaid work, it seems that they do not have enough time to do everything effectively. This affects student’s productivity, having negative impacts on student’s future.
Meanwhile, obliging young people to do unpaid work are likely to have adverse effect on the initial meaning of social activity. In fact, the purpose of this activity is to help community and make life better. However, forcing students to do a charity can lead to resentment amongst them, and this will make them to fulfill their obligations with lower level of enthusiasm which certainly results in disappointing job performance. For example, if high school students are required to help neighborhood to clean the garden according to a program of a community organization, but these students feel that they are too exhausted due to load of homework. Therefore, they would not finish the obligation effectively, and this, of course, affecting the reputation of social organization.
In conclusion, teenagers may choose to work for free and help others, but in my opinion we should not make this as a compulsory part of education program.Attachments:
