The line chart illustrates the data on the number of products in tons exchanged by various types of transport in UK from 1974 to 2002
Overall, we saw a general upward tendency over 18-year period. While road was the most common mode to transport goods, pipeline represented the least favorable choice.
In the year 1974, while 80 million tons of products were shipped on road, which was considered as the most popular type, only approximately 5 million tons were exchanged on pipeline. After that, the figure for pipeline gradually increased over 20 year period and reached the peak at over 20 million in 1994 and remained stable for the remaining years. Nevertheless, the quantities of products interchanged on road fluctuated from 1978 to 1997 and dropped to the lowest point at 65 million tons in 1980 before rose rapidly to nearly 100 million in 2002.
During the same period, water and rail had a similar figure, starting at 40 million tons in 1974 and stabilized until 1978. From 1978 to 1994, while the number of goods transferred by ship increased gradually to 55 million, the figure for train decreased moderately to 25 million.
